Eric Macharia Ndwiga, a 26-year-old boda boda salesman who spends his days navigating the streets of Thika selling yoghurt, is the latest winner of Betika’s KSh50 million Must Be Won Jackpot, one of the biggest weekly gaming payouts in Kenya.
Originally from Runyenjes in Embu County and now residing in Thika, Eric spends his days navigating the streets delivering yoghurt to his customers.
Like many Kenyans, he plays the jackpot during work breaks. On the day that would change his life, Eric and his fiancée, Sheila, sat down to analyse the week’s fixtures and placed their KSh49 jackpot entry, something they routinely do together.
Sheila correctly predicted 9 out of 15 matches. Eric went even further, hitting an impressive 13 out of 15 predictions, the highest number of correct predictions that week, securing the KSh50 million windfall.
“I first received a call from Betika and then saw the announcement on social media. My heart just stopped,” Eric said.
“But I didn’t believe it. I thought it was a scam or a mistake. I even called customer care to confirm. I kept refreshing my phone, waiting for the official SMS. That was the longest night of my life. The official confirmation message landed in my box and that’s when reality finally sank in,” he said.
Despite the windfall, Eric reported back to work the following day, continuing his regular yoghurt delivery route in Thika.
“I still went back to work. I’ve worked hard for everything I have. I only took a few hours away from work to present my details and spend time with Sheila, but I have since returned to work. I have customers who rely on me,” Eric stated.
While Eric has yet to make final decisions on how he will invest the Ksh 50 million, he says supporting vulnerable children is already high on his priority list.
“Thika has many street families, and children are the most affected. Helping street children is something I plan to do,” he said.
