From world champion to climate champion: Lukenya University honours Patrick Makau, unveils 4th 10 Million Trees Marathon

A proud and historic moment unfolded at Lukenya University, Mtito Andei, in Makueni County, as the institution celebrated excellence, leadership, and environmental stewardship by honouring a global sports icon turned climate advocate.

The university conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree (Honoris Causa) upon Mr. Patrick Makau, former world marathon champion, in recognition of his outstanding athletic achievements, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to championing climate action. The honour paid tribute to a true icon whose legacy transcends sport and continues to inspire generations to pursue excellence with purpose.

The prestigious recognition coincided with the launch of the 4th Edition of the 10 Million Trees Marathon, a flagship environmental initiative spearheaded by the university. Set to take place on 28th March 2026, the upcoming edition promises to be bigger, bolder, and more inclusive, offering something for everyone while reinforcing the urgent call for collective action against climate change.

Patrick Makau’s prestigious recognition coincided with the launch of the 4th Edition of the 10 Million Trees Marathon, a flagship environmental initiative spearheaded by the Lukenya University.

Speaking during the ceremony, Lukenya University Board of Trustees Chairperson Sylvia Kasanga noted that the decision to honour Mr. Makau was driven by the need to recognize homegrown champions who lead by example and use their influence to create positive societal impact. Her remarks were echoed by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Judith Wafula, who emphasized the importance of partnerships and collective responsibility in mitigating the effects of climate change, particularly in vulnerable regions.

Located in a semi-arid area, Lukenya University has positioned itself as a hub for climate resilience and sustainable development. Communities both near and far from the institution are already reaping the benefits of the 10 Million Trees initiative, which has provided indigenous and fruit tree seedlings, agronomy advisory services, and economic opportunities. Local farmers are empowered not only to plant trees but also to sell seedlings to the university, creating a sustainable value chain that supports livelihoods while advancing environmental conservation.

Through bold leadership, community engagement, and transformative initiatives, Lukenya University continues to demonstrate that education, sport, and environmental stewardship can work hand in hand to build a greener, more resilient future.
