A major traffic incident has disrupted Nairobi’s Southern Bypass this morning after a lorry collided with a fuel tanker near Ram Residency, triggering a massive explosion and fire.
The tanker overturned and burst into flames near the Carnivore area/Lang’ata underpass, sending thick black smoke billowing across the highway and forcing closure of the affected stretch.
Kenya Red Cross posted on X ”A road traffic incident involving a lorry and a fuel tanker, which led to an explosion, has been reported near Ram Residency along the Southern Bypass. The highway has been temporarily closed. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.”
Emergency responders, including firefighters, police, and rescue teams, rushed to contain the blaze and secure the area. Motorists were urged to exercise extreme caution and use alternative routes such as Ngong Road, Mbagathi Way, or other bypass connectors to avoid gridlock.
