Kaimosi Friends University has organized a three-day specialized training on Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) for its fourth-year students in the School of Education and Social Sciences.
The training, facilitated by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development KICD aims at strengthening the preparedness of future educators to effectively implement Kenya’s evolving Competency-Based Education (CBE).
The training, which also involves university teaching staff, focuses on curriculum interpretation, learner-centered pedagogies and competency-based assessment which are key components required for the successful delivery of CBC in schools across the country.
Speaking during the official opening of the programme, the Vice Chancellor of Kaimosi Friends University, Prof. Peter N. Mwita, emphasized the importance of equipping future teachers with the skills necessary to support the ongoing transformation of Kenya’s education system.
“The first cohort of learners under the CBC system is expected to transition to university in 2029, and institutions of higher learning must begin preparing now to effectively receive and support these learners.” said Prof. Mwita.
He noted that the university has a critical responsibility in preparing teachers who will drive the implementation of CBC in schools across the country, adding that institutions of higher learning must proactively align their programmes with national education reforms.
“This initiative reflects Kaimosi Friends University’s commitment to preparing future teachers to effectively implement the Competency-Based Curriculum and to respond to the evolving demands of the education sector in Kenya,” he added.
The Vice Chancellor further highlighted that Kenya’s transition to CBC represents a major shift from traditional knowledge-based instruction to a system that emphasizes competencies, creativity, practical skills and critical thinking among learners.
The training comes at a time when universities are preparing for the first cohort of CBC learners expected to transition to higher education in 2029.
