Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shed light on his once close relationship with President William Ruto, saying he played a key role in his rise to power but now feels betrayed by the very man he helped to the top.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s The Explainer show Tuesday night, Gachagua revealed that while he was instrumental in mobilising support for Ruto’s presidency, their relationship has since soured over what he described as dishonesty and corruption.
“When I was helping him to be president, he had very kind words about me, he called me a great mobiliser, a strategist, a people’s man who cared about issues affecting Kenyans,” Gachagua recalled, before accusing the Head of State of turning those narratives against him.
The former Deputy President went further to claim that Ruto has maintained questionable ties with Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti.
Gachagua said he personally facilitated their first meeting, insisting he has evidence of their association. “President William Ruto has a working relationship with Hemedti. I am the one who facilitated the meeting between them on his request,” he asserted.
Domestically, Gachagua sensationally alleged that Ruto has been bribing Members of Parliament and Senators to pass key legislation, declaring that “State House is a crime scene.”
He argued that the President has “no moral authority” to condemn corruption while allegedly using money to control lawmakers.
His candid remarks mark one of the most direct confrontations with his former boss since their public fallout, underscoring the widening cracks within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Political observers note that Gachagua’s bold stance could set the stage for a dramatic showdown as the 2027 elections approach.
