Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian international and Galatasaray loanee, is facing criticism from alleged relatives in his father’s hometown in Edo State, Nigeria, who accuse him of neglecting his family and community despite his footballing success.
The controversy emerged following a viral video featuring Omuyiwa John, who claims to be related to Osimhen’s father, Patrick Osimhen, and alleges that the footballer has distanced himself from his paternal roots.
John recounted that Osimhen’s father grew up in the community, attending the same primary school as himself, before moving to Lagos where he married Victor’s mother.
He alleged that when Osimhen’s mother died, the community had to raise funds to pay for traditional marriage rites before her burial could proceed, as the family had not completed these rites.
John expressed surprise and disappointment that Victor Osimhen and his siblings did not bring their father’s body back to the village for burial, a move considered disrespectful to local customs.
He also noted that the community had supported the family during difficult times but felt abandoned by the football star.
The video highlighted that despite Osimhen’s achievements, including his prolific goal-scoring record and international recognition, he has not visited the community, leading to feelings of neglect among some residents.
The Edo State Governor reportedly brought a television to the local king’s palace to watch one of Osimhen’s UEFA Champions League matches, illustrating local pride in the player despite the strained relationship.
Public reactions to the allegations have been mixed. Some commentators defended Osimhen, arguing that he is not obligated to support extended family members and highlighting the challenges he faced growing up.
Others empathized with the community’s desire for recognition and support from a prominent native son.
Osimhen, currently one of Africa’s top strikers with a successful season at Galatasaray, has not publicly responded to the allegations. The situation underscores complex issues surrounding family expectations, cultural traditions, and the responsibilities of high-profile athletes to their communities.
