Fresh calls for justice have emerged after a viral video showing an Uber driver being assaulted by four women in Kilimani, Nairobi, sparked nationwide outrage.

Despite the footage clearly capturing the attack and damage to the driver’s vehicle, the suspects are yet to face legal consequences.

The incident resurfaced after Nairobi Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria met the driver and shared a strong statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account, condemning the alleged inaction by authorities.

“Yesterday, I met an Uber driver who was beaten up by four ladies in Kilimani and the recorded video went viral online, yet the same ladies are still walking freely out here with no consequences,” Mosiria wrote.

The driver had earlier reported the matter at Kilimani Police Station but claims he was advised to withdraw the case due to lack of witnesses and evidence, unaware at the time that a video of the incident existed.

The footage later circulated widely on social media, showing the women assaulting him and vandalising his car as bystanders watched.

Mosiria used the case to raise concerns over what he termed as a growing imbalance in addressing gender-based violence.

“For how long are we going to neglect and ignore the boy child?” he posed. “The empowerment of the girl child, while important, has unfortunately left the boy child vulnerable and treated like an endangered species.”

He stressed that advocating for women’s rights should not come at the expense of justice for men. “A time has come for us to speak the hard truth: empowerment must be balanced,” Mosiria said. “We must protect all our children and citizens, regardless of gender.”

Calling for immediate police action, Mosiria urged law enforcement to reopen the case. “I call upon the police to intervene immediately, re-arrest the four ladies, and ensure they are produced in court,” he said, adding that the case should serve as a deterrent against violence.

He concluded by reiterating, “GBV has no gender, and justice must apply equally to everyone,” while inviting victims with evidence to come forward.
