Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria has called upon the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to crack down rogue job agencies.
This comes after a distressed mother from Nyakach sparked calls for the government to take action against rogue overseas job recruitment agencies after seeking intervention to bring her ailing daughter back from Oman.
The woman, accompanied by her sister, visited Mosiria’s office to plead for help after her daughter reportedly fell ill while working as a domestic worker abroad.
According to the family, the job opportunity had been arranged by an agency that had promised better prospects overseas.
The mother explained that her daughter later developed a mental condition and is currently in a “very bad state,” prompting the family to seek urgent assistance to facilitate her return to Kenya.
Efforts to reach the recruitment agency have been unsuccessful. The family claims the agency has been “rude, unresponsive, and unwilling to help,” despite repeated attempts to engage them.
Responding to the situation, Mosiria said he immediately contacted an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for guidance.
“I immediately reached out to an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who advised that the family visit their office for further support and arrangements to facilitate her safe return home,” he said.
He noted that the case reflects a growing pattern of Kenyans being misled by fraudulent recruitment agents.
“Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. I continue to encounter many heartbreaking stories of Kenyans being duped by unscrupulous agencies that promise greener pastures abroad,” Mosiria said.
Mosiria, who had previously warned young people about fake job agents preying on overseas employment dreams, is now calling for urgent government intervention.
“I call upon the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant authorities to urgently crack down on such rogue agencies,” he said, adding that Kenyans seeking jobs abroad “deserve dignity, safety, and accountability.”
