Ghost marriage: Young couple killed in a motorcycle accident given a wedding

A devastating four-vehicle collision in Johor, Malaysia, that claimed the lives of a young couple has ended with an extraordinary act of love and cultural devotion: a traditional “ghost marriage.”

Sky Chang Ji Shiang, 20, and his girlfriend, Pang Chong Chong, 18, who had been inseparable for three years, were instantly killed on the night of October 24, after their motorcycle was involved in the fatal crash.

The tragic incident, which involved three motorcycles and a car, claimed a total of four young lives. The two other victims, aged 19 and 20, reportedly worked part-time together at a barber shop in Tangkak. The driver and passenger of the car were reported to be uninjured, and police investigations into the cause of the multi-vehicle accident are ongoing.

A union for the afterlife

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the families of Chang and Pang chose to honour the couple’s deep bond through a rare Chinese cultural ritual known as a ghost marriage (mínghūn).

This ancient practice, which dates back some 3,000 years, involves a ceremony performed by the living to ritually wed two deceased, single individuals, ensuring they have a companion in the afterlife. Though the custom is rarely practised in modern Malaysia, it is sometimes used by families seeking emotional closure and spiritual peace.

A joint wake was held at Chang’s family home in Tangkak, where the couple’s coffins were laid side by side. On the evening of October 26, after religious rites, a simple ghost marriage ceremony was conducted. The ritual symbolised the young lovers’ union, allowing them to depart as husband and wife. The two coffins were then transported to the crematorium on October 27.

Grief and Cultural Solace

The grief over the sudden loss is immense. Chang was an only child, and his distraught mother expressed her profound loss, telling the New Straits Times, “How am I supposed to face this ordeal in the future? I no longer have a companion in life.”

For the families, the ghost marriage served as a poignant gesture a final, heartfelt act to honour a love story cut short and fulfil the unspoken desire for their children to remain together, even in death.
