‘Girl, shut up!’: Passaris and Ciru Muriuki clash over mask vendor shooting

A fiery online exchange between Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris and journalist Ciru Muriuki has sparked heated debate across social media, following the police shooting of a mask vendor during recent protests in Nairobi.

The spat began when Passaris took to X (formerly Twitter) condemning the fatal shooting of the vendor at close range by a police officer. In her strongly worded post, the MP demanded reforms in police recruitment, training and mental health support.

“It is time we review the entry criteria, invest in psychosocial support for our officers, implement mandatory body cameras and build a police service grounded in professionalism, dignity and accountability,” Passaris wrote.

However, journalist Ciru Muriuki was unimpressed by the statement. In a blunt reply, she said:

“Girl, shut up. You’re not with us. Leave us alone.”

The post triggered a response from Passaris, who defended her position and rebuked Muriuki for what she called a betrayal of sisterhood.

“Even when fighting for justice, I’m told to shut up. Yet, I am an elected Member of Parliament for Nairobi County. My job is to speak up for Nairobians — all of them,” Passaris responded.

But Muriuki doubled down, reiterating her stance with another scathing post:

“I don’t think you understood me the first time, so I’ll say it again. Girl, shut up. Leave us alone. OMG.”

The war of words did not end there. Passaris fired back, hinting that her remarks may have touched a nerve:

“When someone tells you three times to shut up for doing your job, just know you’ve already said something worth hearing. I lead. I serve. I speak. That won’t change. I recommend counselling to manage your anger.”

While the original point of contention — the killing of the hawker — remains a serious concern, the online back-and-forth quickly took center stage, dividing public opinion.

Some accused Passaris of hypocrisy due to her affiliation with the ruling administration, which is facing backlash for its handling of protests. Others came to her defense, arguing that she had every right — and responsibility — to demand justice.
