Gloria Orwoba withdraws petition challenging her expulsion from Senate

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominated senator Gloria Orwoba has formally withdrawn a petition she had filed challenging her expulsion from the party and subsequent removal from office.

The withdrawal was communicated through a notice filed by her legal representatives, Mabeya Advocates and lawyer Duncan Okatch.

The petition had named the UDA party, the Registrar of Political Parties, the Senate, and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) among the respondents.

“TAKE NOTICE that the Petitioner herein withdraws the entire suit against the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Respondents. The Petitioner hereby prays that the entire suit be marked as withdrawn with no orders to costs,” the notice stated in part.

According to her lawyer, Duncan Okatch, the application had been overtaken by events, including the swearing-in of Consolata Wabwire as the new UDA nominated senator a move Orwoba’s petition had initially sought to block.

The withdrawn petition had also sought a declaration that Orwoba’s expulsion from the UDA party and her removal from the Senate were unconstitutional, unlawful, and null and void from the outset.

She had accused the party and relevant bodies of violating her political rights, right to fair administrative action, and right to a fair hearing.

Additionally, Orwoba had requested an order of prohibition to restrain the respondents from further interfering with her position and rights as a nominated senator.

The withdrawal marks a significant turn in the political saga that has seen Gloria Orwoba at odds with her party, culminating in her replacement in the Senate.

It is not immediately clear whether she plans to pursue any further legal or political action following the petition’s withdrawal.
