What started as a light conversation quickly turned into an emotional moment no one saw coming. Isaac Otesa, popularly known as Goliath wa Bungoma and recognized for his towering physique, broke down while recalling a painful chapter of his life during an interview with Betty Kyallo on #ThisFridayWithBetty.
Goliath revealed that he had already spent two years grinding in Nairobi when he found himself being hosted by popular media personality Obinna. But the meeting did not go the way he had hoped.
Instead, he says he was sat down and given advice that cut deep.
“Goliath we kitu yenye utafanya, itabidi urudi ushago ujipange ndio urudi Nairobi,” he recalled, a moment that brought him to tears live on air.
The words echoed something Obinna had said earlier in a December 2024 interview, where he was even more direct:
“You don’t have a currently marketable brand or talent that we can capitalize on or leverage on. Because unasema we ni mrefu, ehe?”
For Goliath, the moment was crushing.
“Niliskia vibaya sana. Hata nilipotoka hapo nilikuwa stranded hata sikuwa na mahali pa kuenda,” he said.
Despite the setback, Goliath says he never went back to the village.
Instead, he held on and kept pushing through Nairobi’s tough streets until an opportunity finally came his way.
That breakthrough came when Patrick from Car Soko offered him a brand ambassador car deal, a moment Goliath says changed everything.
What makes the story even more remarkable is that Goliath says he holds no bitterness toward Obinna.
From being told to pack up and leave Nairobi, to landing a brand deal and eventually sitting across from Betty Kyallo to tell his story, Goliath wa Bungoma’s journey is one of rejection, resilience, and an unexpected rise.
