The government has allocated Ksh1.4 billion to fund rural electrification projects in Machakos County, as part of efforts to expand energy access to underserved areas.
Speaking during the launch of these projects, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi called on Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to join President William Ruto’s administration in order to ensure the Ukambani region fully benefits from such development initiatives.
Wandayi emphasized that aligning with the current government would allow the region to access improved infrastructure and services, similar to other areas that were previously in the opposition but have since benefited by working closely with the government.
“President Ruto has opened a new chapter of leadership in Kenya that emphasizes on uniting all Kenyans and ensuring development projects across the country. I was once an opposition MP in parliament but I joined the Government in the spirit of national unity,” said Wandayi.
He expressed concern that the Ukambani region continues to remain in the opposition after every election due to Kalonzo’s hardline political stance, which he said has slowed down the region’s development.
At the same event, Machakos Town MP Dr. Caleb Mule urged residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA), highlighting it as a crucial step in accessing affordable and quality healthcare under the government’s new health system.
He encouraged locals not to be left behind in the nationwide SHA registration drive.
The leaders emphasized the importance of collaboration with the national government and citizen participation in national programs to unlock more opportunities and accelerate progress in Machakos and the wider Ukambani region.
