Government announces reduction of fees across all public universities

In a bold step to make Higher Education more affordable, the Government of Kenya has announced a reduction of fees across all academic programmes in Public Universities.

In a notice dated July 31, 2025 the Principal Secretary for Higher Education Dr. Beatrice Muganda Inyangala directed that new regulations would take effect from September 1, 2025 for first years as well as continuing students.

”In direct response to concerns raised by students and their families , the Government has lowered fees payable by students across all academics programmes.”

”This bold steps reaffirms our commitment to ensuring affordable , accessible and quality university education while maintaining the financial sustainability of our institutions,” read part of the notice.

The State Department reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring affordable, accessible and quality education while maintaining the financial sustainability of learning institutions.

In addition, the Government urged all public universities to update their admissions and finance portals to reflect the revised fees of academic programmes.

Public universities are notified that the entire cost of programmes will continue to be met through a combination of tuition fees, scholarships and loans would be based on the needs of the individual students.

The Government added that it remains steadfast in its vision to transform higher education as a cornerstone of national development.

”We count on your full cooperation to implement this financing reforms efficiently, and in the best interest of Kenyan students and families,” noted the Ministry of Education.
