Government assures football stakeholders of ironclad security as CHAN kick-off nears

The countdown to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) is on, and Kenya is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring a secure and memorable tournament.

With teams, officials, and fans set to arrive next week, the government has unveiled comprehensive security measures for the Group A fixtures and the final, to be held at the refurbished Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums from early August.

In a joint inspection yesterday evening, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, alongside Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, assured the nation and the continent of Kenya’s readiness.

“As a ministry, we have implemented comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of participating teams, officials, and fans,” stated Murkomen.

He detailed a robust plan, including high-tech CCTV cameras, controlled access points, stringent crowd control, dedicated emergency response teams, and a coordinated security personnel presence throughout the venues.

Sports CS Mvurya reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering a world-class event, emphasizing that the extensive renovations at Kasarani and Nyayo meet all CAF standards.

“We are pleased to report that the security plans in place… meet the required standards to ensure a safe and enjoyable tournament for all stakeholders,” he affirmed, also urging fans to secure their tickets early online, with sales opening this Wednesday.

Further bolstering confidence, Murkomen revealed that security personnel are undergoing specialized training in line with CAF regulations, ensuring professional and fan-friendly service.

To ease the entry process for international delegations, the Ministry of Interior has also streamlined immigration procedures.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars are set to kick off their CHAN campaign on August 3rd against two-time champions DR Congo at Kasarani, before facing Angola, Zambia, and Morocco in subsequent Group A matches at Nyayo Stadium.

This monumental tournament, a “Pamoja CHAN” co-hosted with Tanzania and Uganda, also serves as a crucial dry run for the eagerly anticipated 2027 AFCON.

The stage is set for a celebration of African football, with Kenya primed to host a safe and spectacular showpiece.
