Government officials rally Mt Kenya to back Ruto’s re-election

Top government officials have intensified efforts to rally residents of Mt Kenya region behind President William Ruto’s administration, urging them to support ongoing development initiatives despite growing criticism over the high cost of living and unfulfilled promises.

During a government sensitisation forum held at Kahuguini Primary School grounds in Gatundu South, senior officials highlighted major projects being implemented in the region, saying they were designed to transform lives and spur economic growth.

The event was led by Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura, alongside Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, and several Principal Secretaries including Salome Beacco (Correctional Services), Mary Muthoni (Public Health), Alex Wachira (Energy and Petroleum), and Elijah Mwangi (Sports).

Also present were various parastatal chairpersons and directors.

CS Wahome said her ministry had made significant progress in digitizing land processes to enhance transparency and curb fraud.

She, however, noted that the full implementation of the initiative requires an estimated Ksh 35 billion.

“We have brought efficiency and reduced fraud in land transactions to a large extent. We are now working with partners to ensure the program is rolled out countrywide,” said Wahome.

Principal Secretaries Beacco and Muthoni urged young people to shun drug and substance abuse, which they said continues to derail the potential of many youth in the region.

They encouraged them to take advantage of government programs such as Ajira Digital, Affordable Housing, and NYOTA to secure a better future.

“We have many young people in prison today because of drug and alcohol abuse, which often leads to crime. We want to urge them to protect their future by avoiding such habits,” said Beacco.

“Drug abuse remains a serious problem in Central Kenya. That’s why we are moving around to sensitize our people about its dangers,” added PS Muthoni.

On his part, Government Spokesman Mwaura said the Kenya Kwanza administration has delivered on key promises, citing the reduction of fertilizer prices, employment of teachers, and job creation both locally and abroad.

“This government has done what no other has achieved. We have employed more teachers than any administration since independence, reduced the cost of fertilizer, stabilized the economy, and created new job opportunities,” he said.

The sensitisation drive comes amid growing discontent among residents of Mt Kenya over the rising cost of living, heavy taxation, and perceived slow implementation of campaign pledges.

The region, which commands a significant voting bloc, remains a crucial battleground for President Ruto as he seeks to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
