Government seeks to rescue over 1000 Kenyans detained abroad

More than 1000 Kenyans are currently incarcerated abroad for various crime related charges.

This is according to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who acknowledged the complexity of most of these charges.

Mudavadi who doubles up as the Cabinet secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs reiterated that the Kenyan government is currently working on settling numerous cases involving Kenyans detained abroad, but the matter is complicated and requires cautious approach due to diplomatic policies and relations.

Mudavadi said the government is working tirelessly to ensure these Kenyans are repatriated back to Kenya but through the right diplomatic avenues.

Mudavadi revealed this when he officially welcomed Stephen Munyakho, a Kenyan who survived execution in Saudi Arabia after being linked to murder charges.

Munyakho, who was flanked by his family could not hide his joy, expressing gratitude to Kenyans and well wishers who contributed to his freedom, including the Muslim World League, which contributed approximately Ksh.129 million towards his freedom.

The 51-year-old landed at the JKIA in the early hours of Tuesday July 29, 2025 after spending 14 years behind bars in a Saudi Arabia prison.
