The government will build a monument at Chetambe fort in Webuye East, Bungoma County, to honour local people who were killed by colonial forces while resisting British rule.
Speaking during the annual Tachoni Cultural Festival at the Masinde Muliro University grounds, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula said the monument will be built on a 20-acre piece of land.
Wetang’ula said it will serve as a historical and cultural tourism site for the community.
He noted that the massacre of locals who fought for freedom can only be properly remembered through a monument, adding that the government has not abandoned earlier plans to set up the site.
The Speaker praised the Tachoni Cultural Network, led by chairman Samson Muyundo, for their efforts to preserve the community’s culture. He was also installed as a Tachoni elder.
Senate Chief Whip Wafula Wakoli called on the Bungoma County Government to increase funding for cultural activities, noting that Culture is a devolved function.
Bungoma County MP Catherine Wambilyanga and area MP Martin Pepela welcomed the decision to build the monument.
They also praised the revival of Tachoni Cultural Festival, saying that, together with the monument, it will help preserve heritage and promote unity.
The leaders urged residents to be united and maintain peace and unity as the region prepares to welcome the New Year.
