The National government, through the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, has announced plans to establish Kenya’s first nuclear power plant in Siaya County, aiming to enhance electricity access across the country.
Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi reaffirmed the Kenya Kwanza administration’s dedication to expanding electricity coverage nationwide, stating that the landmark nuclear project will not only improve access to power but also create employment opportunities and drive economic transformation in Siaya County.
Speaking after presiding over the launch of rural electrification projects benefiting 117 households in Rang’ala village and 76 households in Asango village, Ugunja constituency on June 14, 2025, Wandayi emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to efficient service delivery.
“The government is planning to establish a nuclear power plant in Siaya, to produce electricity and offer job opportunities to residents,” said Wandayi.
He brushed aside political criticism, reiterating that the administration’s primary focus remains on delivering essential services rather than engaging in unnecessary political debates.
The CS also voiced concerns over the rising cases of electricity infrastructure vandalism, urging the public to remain vigilant and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to curb the vice.
He emphasized the significant financial investment that the government makes in electricity installations, cautioning against allowing the actions of a few unscrupulous individuals to undermine these efforts.
Wandayi was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Energy, including Beatrice Njuguna, General Manager of the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), who encouraged residents to safeguard the newly installed electricity and use it to enhance their socio-economic well-being.
