Government warns alcohol manufacturers over counterfeit brews and illegal syndicates

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has issued a stern warning to all licensed alcohol manufacturers over the rising circulation of counterfeit alcoholic products in Kenya, citing serious threats to public safety, national security, and government revenue.

In a letter dated December 23, 2025, addressed to licensed alcohol manufacturers, the State Department for Internal Security expressed concern over what it termed a “grave national issue” following the increased presence of fake alcoholic beverages in the market.

The ministry noted that the proliferation of counterfeit alcohol has negatively impacted legitimate businesses while endangering the lives of consumers.

Official statement signed by PS Raymond Omollo.

According to the letter, recent multi-agency enforcement operations led by NACADA and the National Police Service have recorded a significant surge in the seizure of counterfeit alcohol.

Authorities revealed that most of the illegal products are direct imitations of popular brands produced by reputable and licensed manufacturers, raising concerns over brand misuse and consumer deception.

More troubling, the ministry disclosed reports suggesting that some licensed manufacturers may be involved in the production of sub-standard alcohol.

The letter stated that this malpractice is allegedly used as a strategy to counter counterfeiters and dominate the market, a move the government says has deprived it of substantial revenue while putting Kenyans at risk.

“The Government is on high alert over these malpractices, especially during the festive season,” the letter read, warning that severe action would be taken against culpable manufacturers.

These measures include the withdrawal of operating licenses and criminal prosecution.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and protecting the integrity of the country’s economy.

It urged manufacturers to adhere strictly to regulatory standards and distance themselves from illicit networks involved in counterfeit alcohol production and distribution.

The letter was signed by Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, who emphasized that the government will not hesitate to act decisively to protect the lives of Kenyans and maintain lawful trade practices.
