‘Push for my impeachment is a plot by my rival’ -Governor Mutai

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has accused County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai of pushing for his removal from office, through impeachment.

Governor Mutai noted that the County Assembly Speaker has a long political history in the county, noting he had previously served as the Finance CEC and Roads CEC before attaining his current role.

“This is a carefully planned move for political reasons,” Mutai told the Senate on Wednesday August 27, 2025. “We have a speaker whose interest is to become the governor,” he added.

He warned that if the impeachment is upheld, it would set a dangerous precedent where any official could be removed by rivals with “ambition and good money.”

This is the second time the governor has faced this challenge. Last year’s impeachment failed because his defense team successfully argued that the County Assembly did not meet the required two-thirds majority vote.

They proved that only 31 members, instead of the necessary 32, voted in favor, leading the Senate to dismiss the case.

The assembly’s lawyer this time, Elisha Ongoya, presented evidence supporting the new charges of corruption, abuse of office, and violating the constitution.

The trial continues tomorrow, with a final Senate vote expected on Friday. The governor’s fate now hinges on whether senators believe the evidence of misconduct or his claim of a political conspiracy.
