Nyamira County has partnered with the Safaricom Mpesa Foundation to construct a Ksh60 million Mother and Child Health Unit at Nyamusi Sub-County Level Four Hospital.
Governor Amos Nyaribo, who presided over the groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, said the project will be a game-changer in improving universal healthcare delivery in the county.
“Once this facility is complete, we expect the birth mortality rates to go down drastically,” Nyaribo said, noting that healthcare was one of his top manifesto pledges.
The unit is expected to be completed within six months and launched by March 2026. According to Nyaribo, the county will also address persistent drug shortages by restocking the central medical store at Nyamira County Referral Hospital.
He further assured community health providers of timely payment and confirmed that they are now covered under the Social Health Authority scheme.
Residents welcomed the project, saying it would encourage more mothers to give birth despite the tough economic situation.
“This will motivate families to have more children, knowing that quality healthcare is nearby,” said Thomas Ndege, a Nyamusi resident.
Safaricom Mpesa Foundation Trust CEO Patricia Ithau said the facility will host 2,000 beds and benefit from a borehole to provide clean water.
Health CECM Dr. Donald Mogoi projected that the project would help reduce child mortality rates from the current 3 per 1,000 to zero.
