Kisumu County is making significant strides in its commitment to nurturing sporting talent and enhancing infrastructure, with Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o officially launching a brand-new boxing ring at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground on Monday evening.
This latest addition is part of a broader county strategy to boost youth participation in boxing.
“Last evening, we hit a major milestone in our commitment to nurturing young talent with the launch of a brand-new boxing ring,” Governor Nyong’o announced on his official X account, emphasizing that the facility marks “a huge step forward in developing boxing talent right here in Kisumu.”
The timing of the launch is particularly exciting, as it precedes the highly anticipated Kisumu vs. Uganda boxers’ tournament slated for August 18.
To ensure Kisumu’s local team is fully prepared, Governor Nyong’o pledged to provide them with complete boxing kits.
The initiative’s scope is set to expand beyond the city, with plans to “roll out similar boxing facilities in towns and municipalities across the county,” creating more opportunities for young athletes to train and excel.
Governor Nyong’o underscored the transformative power of sports in empowering youth, reaffirming the county’s dedication to continuous investment in sports infrastructure and support systems.
“Sports are vital in shaping the future of our youth,” he stated, vowing sustained efforts to make these opportunities a reality.
Further solidifying Kisumu’s position as a sporting hub, the county received an allocation of Sh800 million from the State Department for Sports on July 12 to upgrade the historic Moi Stadium.
This substantial project, announced by President William Ruto last month, has generated considerable excitement among sports enthusiasts.
A team of engineers has already assessed the facility, with Kisumu County Executive Committee Member for Sports, Beatrice Odongo, envisioning it as “one of the best facilities that will be used not just within Kisumu County, but in the western region and even in East Africa.”
The Moi Stadium upgrade is projected for completion by the end of 2026,.
