Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has called on ODM supporters to fully embrace the new broad-based government, emphasizing that the benefits of the working relationship between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and President William Ruto’s administration will soon become evident.
Speaking at a public meeting in Pala Koguta, Ndhiwa Constituency, Wanga reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
“We support the government and the programmes the President is rolling out. We know we might not see the results immediately, but the improvements taking place in our health sector will soon be evident. Even though there have been teething problems with SHA, the programme is picking up and will soon transform our people’s healthcare,” Wanga stated, referring to the Social Health Authority (SHA) reforms.
As ODM Chairperson, Wanga also issued a stern warning to politicians against attacking party leader Raila Odinga, stressing that ODM would not tolerate insults directed at either Odinga or President Ruto. “If you insult Baba, you insult us.
If you disrespect Baba, we will also disrespect you. But since we are in the broad-based government, we will also protect the President and speak for him and his programmes,” she said.
Governor Wanga’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts to foster unity and cooperation between ODM and the ruling coalition, a move that has sparked debate among party supporters and the wider public. Proponents argue that the collaboration will bring much-needed development to ODM strongholds, while critics remain skeptical about the long-term impact.
Wanga also took the opportunity to rally support for the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations, which Homa Bay will host on June 1. “On June 1, Homa Bay will be privileged to host this year’s Madaraka Day, and we want to welcome everybody. Our people are hospitable, and we want to take this opportunity to welcome everyone,” she said.
The governor’s message underscores a strategic shift in ODM’s approach, focusing on constructive engagement with the national government in hopes of delivering tangible benefits to its constituents. As preparations for Madaraka Day intensify, all eyes will be on Homa Bay as it showcases the fruits of this new political partnership.
