Gov’t launches comprehensive operation to end banditry in Kerio Valley

The government has launched a comprehensive security operation in Kainuk, a border area between Turkana and West Pokot counties, aimed at eradicating banditry and restoring stability in the region.

Speaking during a visit to Kainuk, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, said: “We have made significant progress in restoring peace and normal life in many parts of the Kerio Valley region. There are, however, areas where we need to do more to eradicate acts of banditry and weed out criminal elements trying to take us back.”

CS Murkomen noted that the ongoing operation will involve disarmament and the apprehension of perpetrators, including those sponsoring criminal activities.

He also called on politicians from both counties to avoid inflammatory statements and urged residents to remain calm as security agencies intensify their efforts.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (KPS) Eliud Lagat and senior security officials from Turkana and West Pokot counties accompanied the CS, reinforcing the government’s commitment to lasting peace and stability in the Kerio Valley region.

The Kerio Valley region has in the past faced persistent security challenges, with sporadic attacks by bandits disrupting communities and claiming lives.

This announcement comes shortly after at least four people were shot and killed in a banditry attack in Aroo area, Kainuk, Turkana County, highlighting the continued threat posed by criminal networks.

The area is part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU), a wider government initiative targeting banditry in Turkana, West Pokot, Baringo, Samburu, Marsabit, Meru, and Isiolo counties.

Late last year, CS Murkomen noted that Operation Maliza Uhalifu had recorded remarkable success in silencing guns and restoring peace in the Kerio Valley region.

Building on this momentum, the government is intensifying interventions aimed at deepening cohesion, fostering reconciliation, and pacifying the region for sustainable development.
