Gov’t to construct 10,000 affordable housing units, 14 markets in Busia County – President Ruto

The Government — through the State Department for Housing and Urban Development — will construct an estimated 10,000 Affordable Housing Units, a total of 6000 bed capacity hostels for students as well as 14 modern markets in Busia County.

President William Ruto on Friday, October 31 said this will transform towns and expand access to decent and affordable homes while creating jobs for thousands of youths, women and the manufacturing sector.

The President spoke after laying the foundation stone for the Bumbe Technical Training Institute hostels development. The 340 bed capacity  hostel will provide better accomodation for some of the institution’s 3,500 students. It will have other amenties such as a study areas, food stalls, shops, a minimart, and a laundromat, as well as a guard house, an underground water tank among others.

At the same time, President Ruto expressed his commitment to ensure all the projects are completed within the set timelines, saying every major city or town in Kenya is now a beneficiary of the Affordable Housing Program.

During an inspection tour of The Boma Yangu Funyula Housing Project in Funyula, the President said Kenyans shouldn’t be mislead by selfish politicians, insisting that the housing program will serve generations to come.

The Funyula AHP project will deliver 955 housing units comprising 10 blocks of social, affordable and market rate housing.

“We have provided opportunities for locals to hone their skills in their craft by engaging them as casual labourers, semi-skilled workers as well as professionals. We have also partnered with local jua kali artisans to provide fabricated doors and windows, as we seek to boost the economy of the region,” he added.

The project symbolizes the rise of modern gated communities with upgraded infrastructure, access roads, reliable water supply, and improved public spaces and has already provided employment oportunities to over 300 youths directly and indirectly.

The President also presided over the groundbreaking of the Amukura Teachers Training College Hostels, Alupe University Students’ Housing located in the Teso South constituency, the laying of the foundation stone for the construction of phase one of Boma Yangu Busia ATC Phase 1 Estate in Matayos Constituency as well as the launch of the Busia County Strategic Market in Malaba Town.

Alupe student hostel will consist of twin blocks with a capacity of 840 beds and will integrate essential infrastructure such as a basketball pitch, a swimming pool and a student center.

Busia ATC phase 1 is a massive 11 residential blocks housing project comprising 1,025 units in 3 typologies (social, affordable, and market). It integrates essential infrastructure, including green spaces, community amenities, and commercial areas, to ensure a complete living environment.

The project has provided over 1000 employment opportunities for the locals both directly and indirectly while the Jua Kali artisans will be engaged to supply windows and doors for the project.
