“Twisted metal and broken glass,” DJ Darius mourns parents killed on their way to celebrate his brother’s graduation

What was meant to be a joyful family celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for DJ Darius and his family.

On the evening of August 6, 2025, Bishop Prof. Josiah Onyancha and his wife (DJ Darius and Journalist Edwin Nyarangi’s parents) were killed in a devastating road accident along the Narok–Mai Mahiu highway. The couple was travelling to Nairobi to witness their son, Nyarangi, graduate from Mount Kenya University.

In an emotional video shared on his Facebook page, DJ Darius stood at the crash site, showing the wreckage of the vehicle that claimed his parents’ lives in the tragic accident.

“This is what remains of the wreckage… the very accident that took both my parents’ lives. It’s hard to believe that in just one moment, everything changed. They were full of life just days ago, preparing to come celebrate my brother’s graduation. And now, here I am, standing in front of twisted metal and broken glass the painful evidence of that tragic day,” Dj Darius wrote.

The crash, which involved a head-on collision, ended a journey that symbolized love, sacrifice, and hope. Instead of preparing for celebration, the Onyancha family was thrown into mourning.

Edwin, the son whose graduation they were coming to attend, was left devastated. The joy of academic achievement was quickly eclipsed by the sudden loss of both parents.

Bishop Onyancha, a respected spiritual leader and 2022 Kisii gubernatorial aspirant, was widely known for his humility, integrity, and commitment to community service. His death, alongside his beloved wife, has sent shockwaves through Kisii County and beyond.

Mount Kenya University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi, joined many in mourning the couple, describing Bishop Onyancha as “a respected scholar, a revered spiritual leader, and a beacon of wisdom.”

“His contributions to the scholarly and faith communities will be remembered with deep respect and admiration,” said Prof. Jaganyi.

Later, DJ Darius thanked the public for their overwhelming support following the tragic loss of his parents. Posting on his Facebook page Dj Darius confirmed that the family had arrived safely in Kisii and placed their parents at Hema Hospital mortuary. “This has been a painful journey, but your love has been our strength,” he shared.”
