Grief engulfs Mathira village as two children burnt beyond recognition in devastating fire

Tragedy struck Mathira Constituency’s Mutitu Village in Nyeri County on Tuesday, July 15 night after two children lost their lives in a devastating house fire.

The victims, identified as Vincent Kamau (4) and Scholastica Nyambura (8), were trapped inside their home when the fire broke out at approximately 7:30 p.m. Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze originated in one of the bedrooms where the children were sleeping, quickly spreading through the house before neighbours and emergency services could intervene.

Despite desperate rescue attempts by local residents, the intensity of the fire made access to the house impossible. Firefighters eventually extinguished the flames, but unfortunately, the children’s charred remains were discovered in the debris.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire. Investigations are currently underway to establish the circumstances leading to the fatal incident.

The area Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi visited the bereaved family on Wednesday, July 16 morning, expressing his condolences and assuring the family of government support during this difficult time. He also called for thorough investigations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The children’s mother was reportedly away visiting a sick relative at the time of the incident. She returned to find her home destroyed and her children gone, a loss that has left the entire community in mourning.

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi visited the bereaved family on Wednesday, July 16 morning, expressing his condolences and assuring the family of government support during this difficult time.

The bodies have been moved to the Karatina Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for preservation and postmortem examination as investigations continue.
