Harambee Stars has officially withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament, which was scheduled to begin today, 21st July, in Tanzania. The decision comes after advice from the team’s technical bench, led by Head Coach Benni McCarthy, following an assessment of the prevailing conditions that were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and preparation.

In a statement issued by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on 21st July 2025, it was confirmed that the national team, made up of home-based league players, will not take part in the tournament in Karatu, Tanzania.
“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) wishes to inform the public that the Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania,” the statement read.
Coach McCarthy emphasized that the decision was made to ensure the team’s readiness for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) that kicks off on August 2 through August 30 this year.

“This decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench, after a thorough assessment of the conditions, which were deemed unsuitable for the team’s participation and overall preparation,” said FKF.

Initially, the tournament was intended as a preparatory platform for CHAN 2024. With less than two weeks remaining until the competition, the Harambee Stars will return to Kenya to intensify their final preparations.
“The team will return to Kenya and resume preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, with full focus now shifting to ensuring optimal readiness for the assignment ahead,” FKF added.

The federation concluded the statement by reaffirming its support for Coach McCarthy’s decision, ensuring the team will continue to receive the best environment to prepare and represent Kenya with pride.
CHAN will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, with Kenya hosting the final at Kasarani on 30th August. Kenya will play all its matches at Kasarani, while Group A games will be held at Nyayo Stadium.
