Havertz hurts Leverkusen, PSG crush Chelsea, Valverde stuns City, and Bodo Glimt make more history

It was one of those Champions League nights that reminds fans why European football remains unmatched. Four matches, four very different stories, and drama everywhere.

Arsenal spent most of the night struggling in Germany. At the BayArena, they looked flat and second best for long stretches against a confident Leverkusen side. Robert Andrich’s header from Alejandro Grimaldo’s corner finally gave the hosts the lead seconds after halftime.

The Gunners looked beaten until the closing moments when Kai Havertz delivered a painful twist for his former club. The German forward, who began his career at Leverkusen, stepped up in the 89th minute after Noni Madueke was brought down in the box. Havertz calmly rolled the penalty into the bottom corner. He didn’t celebrate much, but his quiet moment conveyed a powerful message. Arsenal escaped with a vital result, and the tie now heads into the second leg, wide open.

In Paris, Paris Saint-Germain struck first through Bradley Barcola, but Malo Gusto responded to bring Chelsea level. Ousmane Dembélé then restored PSG’s lead before Enzo Fernández once again pulled the visitors back into the contest.

For a while it looked like the match could go either way. Then came the moment that changed everything. Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen misplayed a pass that Barcola intercepted instantly. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia quickly squared the ball, and Vitinha calmly chipped the stranded keeper. The mistake deflated Chelsea completely.

PSG took full advantage. Kvaratskhelia produced two superb late finishes as the French champions surged to a dominant 5-2 victory, leaving Chelsea with a mountain to climb in the return leg.

Elsewhere, Bodo/Glimt continued one of the most remarkable stories in European football. The Norwegian side from a small fishing town dismantled Sporting Lisbon with confidence and composure. Patrick Berg’s side took control when Sondre Fet converted from the penalty spot. Jens Petter Hauge Blomberg doubled the lead before halftime, and Kasper Hogh sealed the result in the 71st minute.

What makes the result even more remarkable is that none of the three scorers have ever played for the Norwegian national team. Yet on a European night they outclassed one of Portugal’s biggest clubs.

At the Santiago Bernabeu, Federico Valverde produced a performance that will be remembered for a long time. Real Madrid were missing several stars, including Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo, while Manchester City arrived as favorites.

Valverde had other ideas.

The Uruguayan midfielder scored a stunning hat-trick in just 22 minutes. The first came from a long Thibaut Courtois ball that caught City’s defense out. The second followed brilliant work from Vinícius Júnior. The third was a powerful volley that left the stadium roaring.

It was Valverde’s first career hat trick, and it came against Pep Guardiola’s side on one of football’s biggest stages.

City now face a daunting task in the second leg, knowing they must score at least three goals just to level the tie.

For English clubs, it was a night filled with frustration. For everyone else watching, it was another unforgettable chapter in the Champions League.
