The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather alert warning of widespread heavy rainfall expected to hit multiple regions across the country in the coming days.
In an advisory covering March 17–23, the department indicated that the rains are likely to intensify from Thursday, raising fears of possible flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
Regions expected to receive significant rainfall include areas in and around the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of eastern Kenya, as well as coastal zones.
In a statement shared on its official X platform, the department cautioned; “Rainfall is expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the Coast region of Kenya with increased intensity from Thursday. Isolated heavy rainfall events are also likely to occur over parts of these same regions.”
The alert comes against the backdrop of ongoing rains that have already caused disruption in several parts of the country, including the capital, Nairobi, where flooding has affected transport and daily activities.
According to the National Police Service, the impact has been severe, with dozens of lives lost nationwide due to flood-related incidents. Authorities say the fatalities include men, women, and children, underscoring the widespread toll of the ongoing weather conditions.
The data further shows that Nairobi has recorded the highest number of deaths, followed by the Eastern region and parts of the Rift Valley. Emergency responders have also managed to rescue several individuals from rising floodwaters.
Authorities are urging residents in affected regions to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and follow safety advisories as the country braces for more intense rainfall in the coming days.
