High Court Judge Diana Kavenza has ordered that Kennedy Kalombotole, the man accused of killing two people inside the wards of the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), undergoes a fresh medical evaluation to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.
Justice Kavenza made the directive after a medical report prepared by Dr. Owiti indicated that the accused suffers from epilepsy and is not mentally fit to face trial at the moment.
According to the report, Dr. Owiti conducted a thorough assessment of Kalombotole and concluded that his medical condition impairs his ability to participate meaningfully in court proceedings.
“We are waiting for a report from KNH to confirm whether he is fit,” Justice Kavenza said, noting that if the hospital’s findings contradict Dr. Owiti’s report, the accused will be referred to Mathare National Teaching and Referral Hospital for further examination by four independent doctors.
The judge added that the court will only proceed with the murder trial once it is satisfied with the medical reports regarding Kalombotole’s mental and physical fitness.
The case will be mentioned on December 17 to confirm the report from KNH.
Kalombotole is the prime suspect in two separate murders that allegedly occurred inside KNH wards, incidents that shocked patients, staff, and the wider public when they were reported.
