Barely two days after the burial of slain Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were, another assassination attempt has rocked Homa Bay County—this time targeting Deputy Governor Joseph Oyugi Magwanga.
According to a member of his security detail who requested anonymity, the attack occurred around 9 p.m. on Sunday May 12, 2025 while the DG was away from his Kabuor village home.
The officer said family members noticed suspicious movements around the compound and quickly alerted Magwanga, prompting him to return via a different route and in a separate vehicle.
Upon the arrival of his decoy vehicle, unknown assailants launched an ambush, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire with the DG’s security team. The attackers were eventually repelled and fled the scene.
Speaking to the press at his residence, Magwanga confirmed receiving death threats in recent days, claiming that he didn’t expect it would escalate that quickly. He urged security agencies to act swiftly and bring the perpetrators to book.
This incident marks the third targeted attack on political leaders from Homa Bay in just two months.
Earlier, MCA Vikings Bondo narrowly escaped an attack in Nairobi, followed by the assassination of MP Ong’ondo Were, also in the capital.
Authorities are yet to make any arrests as investigations continue.
