Tensions flared in Homa Bay County on Saturday, May 3 as local leaders, led by Governor Gladys Wanga, threatened to withdraw support from the broad-based government if the killers of the slain MP, Ong’ondo Were, are not identified and brought to justice before his burial.
Addressing mourners at the late MP’s home in Kachien in Kasipul, Wanga, who also serves as the ODM National Chairperson, said the opposition’s cooperation with the government was not a license for violence against its members.
National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, who accompanied Wanga, gave investigative agencies a stern ultimatum to name those behind the killing before the legislator is laid to rest.
Wanga also condemned what she called disinformation campaigns aimed at tarnishing the late MP’s name, accusing unnamed individuals of using social media to spread lies and divert attention from the real killers.
The leaders and the slain MP’s family called for swift and transparent investigations, insisting the motive behind the murder must be revealed.
