How Kenyans reacted to new affordable housing in Mukuru Kwa Njenga

Most Kenyans are now supporting President William Ruto’s government after the handing over of affordable houses in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums, Nairobi. On Tuesday May 20, 2025, residents in Mukuru interrupted Ruto’s rally by chanting, ‘kumi bila break’ as he handed over the houses.

This was after President Ruto presided over the official handover of newly built affordable housing units to residents in Mukuru Kwa Njenga. The event marked a significant step in the government’s plan to bridge the housing gap and uplift the poor through modern, affordable homes.

A total of 1080 residents are now set to move into the new Mukuru estate, a shift for many families who for decades have lived in unconducive environments. With modern designs and better infrastructure, the new housing units promise to a fresh start.

Some of the beneficiaries have voiced worries and concerns about adjusting to new lifestyle, surroundings and how they will manage to fund the housing bills since each resident will pay Ksh.3800 monthly for 30 years under the 1 affordable room.

Despite this, other citizens who are not the direct beneficiaries are also questioning the funding of this housing project, which partly comes from an impactful housing levy deducted from the salaries of the employed citizens. These deductions have sparked debates and some complaints across the country.

President Ruto, while addressing residents at the handover ceremony, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring Kenyans have access to dignified living. Ruto in his speech claimed that his dream of uplifting the poor from nothing to something has come true.

Majority of Kenyan citizens have expressed interest to vote in Ruto for another term, where they claim that with the handing over of the new houses proves his commitment to uplift the poor and fulfill his promises.
