HSBC SVNS 2: Shujaa defeat Uruguay to secure third place as Lionesses finish sixth

Kenya’s national men’s rugby sevens side, Shujaa, claimed a third-place finish at the second leg of the 2026 HSBC SVNS 2 series in Montevideo after overcoming hosts Uruguay 22–14 at Estadio Charrúa on Monday March 23, 2026 in the morning.

The victory marked a strong response from the Kenyan side following a 12–7 loss to Germany earlier on day two and ensured a repeat of their third-place result from the opening leg held in Nairobi.

The United States lifted the Montevideo title after defeating Germany 29–5 in the final to top the standings with 15 points. Germany finished second on 12 points, while Kenya closed the tournament with 11 points.

In their final match against hosts Uruguay, Francisco Landauer scored and converted the opening try to give the hosts an early lead.

Kenya responded with tries from Patrick Odongo, who crossed twice before halftime with Nygel Amaitsa adding the conversion, while Odongo completed his hat-trick after the restart.

John Okoth then added Kenya’s fourth try.

Dante Soto replied with Uruguay’s second try late in the match, but Shujaa held on to secure a 22-14 victory and confirm a third-place finish.

The result lifts Kenya to 32 points in the overall HSBC SVNS 2 standings, placing them third behind series leaders USA on 38 points.

In the women’s competition, the Kenya Lionesses ended their Montevideo campaign in sixth place following a 19–12 loss to Brazil in their final match on Sunday.

The Lionesses had earlier fallen 27–0 to South Africa on day two, capping a challenging tournament in which their only victory came against Argentina.

Kenya finished the leg with five points from five matches.

They now sit sixth overall in the series standings with 22 points, trailing leaders Argentina, who have accumulated 40 points.

Both Kenyan teams will now prepare for the third and final leg of the HSBC SVNS 2 series scheduled for March 28–29 in São Paulo.
