HSBC SVNS2: Shujaa end day 1 with dominant Belgium win as Lionesses struggle

Kenya’s national men’s rugby sevens team, Shujaa, concluded the opening day of the second leg of the 2026 HSBC SVNS 2 series in Montevideo with an emphatic 20–0 victory against Belgium on Sunday morning, while the Kenya Lionesses experienced an inconsistent run in the women’s competition.

Shujaa recovered strongly after an early setback against the United States, registering consecutive victories over Canada and Belgium to revive their campaign and strengthen their position in the standings.

The Kenyan side now sits third overall with seven points, trailing pool leaders Germany by two points ahead of the decisive matches on day two.

Kenya asserted control early in their clash with Belgium, taking the lead inside two minutes when Kevin Wekesa finished off a well-worked move.

The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 5–0.

Vincent Onyala extended the advantage shortly before halftime, touching down in the seventh minute to give Shujaa a 10–0 cushion at the break after another missed conversion.

The momentum continued after the restart as Patrick Odongo crossed over in the 10th minute, widening the gap to 15–0.

Floyd Wabwire added Kenya’s fourth try two minutes later to effectively seal the contest.

Shujaa maintained defensive discipline for the remainder of the match to secure a comfortable 20-0 victory.

Kenya Lionesses showed on their side determination but finished the day with mixed results.

After opening their campaign with a 19–5 defeat to China, Kenya bounced back with a narrow 12–10 win against Argentina.

However, their final match ended in disappointment as Spain edged them 19–14 in a closely contested encounter.

The Lionesses’ record of one win and two losses places them fourth in the standings with four points, three behind leaders South Africa.

Kenya Lionesses are now scheduled to face South Africa later on Sunday at 20:23 EAT, while Shujaa will take on Germany at 21:55 EAT as both teams aim to improve their standings in the round-robin format competition.

Both Kenyan sides entered the South American leg seeking stronger performances following the opening round in Nairobi, where Shujaa finished third and the Lionesses placed fifth.

The Montevideo tournament runs from March 21–22, with the final leg of the series set to take place in São Paulo the following weekend.
