HSBC SVNS2: Shujaa seal World Championship spot after mixed day 1 results in São Paulo

Kenya’s national men’s sevens side, Shujaa, secured qualification to the HSBC SVNS World Championship after registering two wins and one loss on day one of the SVNS2 third leg in São Paulo, Brazil, on Saturday, March 28, 2026 finishing second in the standings with two matches still to play.

Shujaa opened their campaign in dominant fashion, cruising past Germany 38–7 before suffering a narrow 14–12 defeat to Belgium their first-ever loss to the Europeans in the series.

The Kenyan side quickly recovered, delivering a commanding 40–0 victory over Canada to strengthen their position in the tournament.

The results leave Kenya second in the standings with seven points, two behind leaders Belgium on nine.

The placement guarantees Shujaa a top-three finish in the overall SVNS2 rankings, confirming their qualification for the HSBC SVNS World Championship with two matches to spare.

In their final match of the day, Shujaa produced one of their most complete performances of the tournament in the emphatic win over Canada.

Two tries from Vincent Onyala and another from Festus Shiasi handed Kenya a comfortable 19–0 halftime lead.

After the break, George Ooro, Nygel Amaitsa and Denis Abukuse scored to seal a comprehensive 40–0 victory at full time.

Shujaa will conclude their campaign on Sunday, 29 March, facing the USA at 5:44 PM before taking on Uruguay at 8:34 PM as they aim to finish the leg strongly heading into the championship phase.

Under the revamped competition structure, the top four men’s and women’s teams from SVNS2 will join eight teams from HSBC SVNS Division 1 in the World Championship Series.

The circuit will feature three tournaments in Hong Kong (April 17–19), Valladolid, Spain (May 29–31), and Bordeaux, France (June 5–7).

The overall winners will be crowned world champions, while the top eight teams will earn promotion to the 2026/27 HSBC SVNS Division 1.

The bottom four sides will be relegated to Division II.
