“I don’t think marriage is a compulsory rite of life” Dennis Itumbi

Kenyan political consultant Dennis Itumbi has sparked debate after expressing his unconventional views on marriage, stating that he does not consider it a compulsory stage in life.

Speaking during a recent interview, Itumbi said society has placed unnecessary pressure on individuals to marry after becoming financially stable, yet he personally sees no urgent reason to conform to that expectation.

Itumbi noted that while he would approach someone he genuinely wants to build a long-term relationship with, he avoids pursuing relationships casually because he values people’s time and independence.

The head of Presidential Special Projects & Creative Economy, Dennis Itumbi.

“I don’t think I would have a problem approaching someone I want to have a long-term relationship with,” he said. “I just don’t want to waste someone’s time or tie someone to me in a space where they don’t feel free.”

According to him, major life decisions, such as settling down, should not be made while a partner is left waiting or uncertain.

“I don’t want to make my decision while holding someone’s daughter. When that time comes, I will make it. I know what I need to do when that time comes,” he explained.

Challenging long-standing cultural expectations, Itumbi said marriage has been framed as a natural next step after securing employment, but he does not agree with the idea of marriage as a societal requirement.

“I don’t think this marriage thing is a big issue. Culturally we’ve been brought up to believe that after you get a job you should get married. I am opposed to it,” he stated.

He argued that companionship, family or children are not limited to the institution of marriage.

“If the issue of marriage is children, I can get children without marriage. If it’s companionship, you can get it without marriage,” he said, insisting the choice should be personal rather than dictated by tradition.

Itumbi concluded that he sees “no compelling reason why marriage is a compulsory rite of life,” adding that it should remain an option, not an obligation.
