“I don’t want to get married or have children” – Lydia Wanjiru

Digital creator Lydia Wanjiru has sparked widespread conversation online after publicly announcing her decision to remain both marriage-free and child-free in a deeply personal video shared on her Instagram page.

In the emotional clip, Wanjiru revealed that 2025 was a turning point in her life, a year she says forced her to confront what she truly wants for her future.

“2025 is the year I made up my mind whether I want children or not. Do I ever want to get married? No. I have come to the decision that I don’t want to get married ever,” she said.

While ruling out marriage, Wanjiru made it clear she still values love and companionship. “Do I want to date? Yes, I want companionship.

I want to date, I want to find love. I want to just have someone I can share my life with and whose life I can share,” she explained.

However, she dismissed the traditional structure of long-term cohabitation, saying, “Those paper things, officialising things, living together Monday to Monday, January to December, it’s just not my thing.

I want a companion who’s busy, who has their own place and we meet whenever we plan.”

On the topic of motherhood, Wanjiru was equally firm. “Do I want children? No, I’m officially child-free.

I don’t want biological children. I am ready to be a rich aunty,” she declared.

She traced this decision back to a painful experience in July 2025, when her then-partner was hospitalized.

“I saw how some of the mothers who had their children sick and admitted were sad and hurting, and I was like, this is not for me,” she said, recalling a moment that deeply affected her.

“There was a child, three months old in ICU and even putting an oxygen mask was a problem because the face was small.”

Wanjiru emphasized that her message was not meant to judge others. “This is not to shame anyone who wants to be a mother or get married. If you want to get married, go for it. As for me, marriage-free, child-free.”

Her bold declaration has since ignited mixed reactions across social media, with supporters praising her honesty and self-awareness, while others debate her unconventional stance on relationships and family life.
