“I surrender”: Ben Githae apologies to Gen Zs after wave of public criticism-‘Greetings’

Gospel artist Ben Githae has publicly apologized to Kenyans, particularly Gen Z following weeks of intense online backlash over his perceived closeness to the current administration.

The tano tena hit maker Githae admitted he had received relentless criticism, which Gen Z activists famously term as being “sent greetings”; a form of digital activism where individuals are flooded with calls, messages, and public tags as a form of protest or accountability.

“I surrender. I don’t want any more greetings, you’ve greeted me enough these past three weeks,” Githae stated. “Lead the way, we’ll follow. If I’ve wronged you in any way, I sincerely apologise.”

Githae’s remarks comes weeks after he, alongside fellow gospel artists including Karangu Muraya and Samidoh, visited State House in early May for talks with President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The meeting was aimed at exploring strategies to uplift the music industry and create better opportunities for artists.

However, many young Kenyans viewed the visit as political alignment, prompting criticism from a section of the public who felt artists were being co-opted to sanitise government policies amidst rising youth unrest. In his apology, Githae acknowledged the frustration expressed by Kenyans and urged for unity, promising to be more attentive to the public mood.

His statement has sparked mixed reactions online, with some accepting the apology and others demanding more accountability from public figures who engage with state power during politically sensitive times.
