Life was not always easy for Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, the wife of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who recently opened up during a show about the painful journey that shaped her life.
Dorcas revealed that she grew up facing extreme hardship after her family lost their wealth following the death of her father. She explained that before the tragedy, her family lived comfortably.
However, things changed after her father was imprisoned for seven years after being falsely accused in a case.
By the time he returned home, most of the family property had been sold by relatives, forcing them to leave their home in Murang’a and relocate to Kiandutu, where they started life again with almost nothing.
Growing up in Kiandutu meant surviving without many basic needs. Determined to change her story, Dorcas focused on her education and later joined Kenyatta University, where she pursued a degree in education.
While studying there, she began receiving financial support from the Higher Education Loans Board “boom”. She says the funds helped her buy a few essential items for her mum and eventually got her out of Kiandutu.
But just when things seemed to be improving, another tragedy struck. Dorcas recalled that a gas cylinder she had purchased for her mother caused a fire outbreak at their home.
During the incident, a neighbour who rushed in to help put out the fire sadly died. She says the loss deeply affected her mother, leaving her completely broken.
Seeing her mother in such pain pushed Dorcas into an emotional breakdown, admitting that she reached a point where she struggled with thoughts of ending her life.
Gladly, she never took action and instead decided to continue chasing her dreams hoping for a better future.
Today, Dorcas Rigathi’s life reflects a journey of resilience and transformation. She is now happily married to her husband Rigathi Gachagua and together they have two sons as they continue to engage in faith and community work across the country
