“I was not protesting to gain support for my 2027 bid” – David Maraga clarifies

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has clarified that his participation in the June 25, 2025 Gen Z-led protest was not focused on his 2027 candidature for the Presidency whatsoever.

Maraga, who made headlines by joining young people alongside the Gen Z families in commemorating the departed souls, asserted that his actions were not politically motivated.

“I am not looking for votes or any political benefits, I believed in our young people and understood the fundamental of our democracy, the right to peacefully demonstrate,” Maraga said.

On the concern of whether he misbehaved by appearing in the street, the former CJ said that he cannot be remorseful as he was practicing his constitutional right under article 37, that accrues right for peaceful demonstration.

“I have a right also to express under a peaceful demonstration when I feel like something is not rightly done,” he added.

Maraga further asserted that he would have sympathized with Kenyans even if he could be Chief Justice at the moment, dismissing claims that he went to the street seeking for political credibility.

“I may not have come directly because of my position…I am not saying that I came because of my bid for presidency, but I would have sympathized with the people as well as give them assistance,” Maraga reiterated while emphasizing that the people have a voice in matters governance in the country.

Additionally, Maraga voiced concerns over excessive police force, maiming of people, the erosion of public trust in leadership, and the need for mature , value-based governance, while applauding the youth for taking peaceful, well-organized stand.

Meanwhile, Maraga has also talked on police reforms that have been an issue of concern, saying that the task force was one of his retirement package.

“We got views from the senior and junior officers and they were complaining that there was a lot of disregard of the law,” he said.
