The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) expressed profound concern and disappointment regarding reports of political violence occurring in Kasipul Constituency prior to the by-elections set for 27th November 2025.
In a press release statement, IEBC denounced the reckless violent incidents that have allegedly resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries, as verified by security authorities in Homabay.
These deplorable acts, including hooliganism, harassment, intimidation, property destruction, and violence, are unacceptable as they threaten the democratic progress our nation has strived to build.
IEBC emphasized that political organizations, their supporters, candidates, and everyone participating in the electoral process must, without any exceptions, follow the Electoral Code of Conduct outlined in the Second Schedule of the Elections Act, 2011.
This Code mandates that all participants maintain peace, demonstrate tolerance, and honor the rule of law throughout the election period.
Failure to comply with the Code carries severe penalties, including the potential disqualification of candidates or parties found guilty.
The Commission also sent an investigative team with instructions to determine the facts and propose suitable measures consistent with the Electoral Code of Conduct, which will be enforced firmly and legally.
“While we grieve and express sympathy to the affected families, we call upon security authorities to promptly investigate these terrible acts and prosecute those responsible. Violence is incompatible with democracy and must be addressed with decisive and lawful action,” read the statement.
The Commission restated its dedication to protecting the electoral process’ integrity and guaranteeing that every Kenyan can exercise their democratic rights in a setting free from fear, violence, intimidation, or coercion.
“We appeal to all parties, political figures, candidates, and citizens, to exercise self-control, honor the law, and prioritize national interests above personal concerns,” said Erastus Edung, IEBC chairperson.
The statement ended by reminding all Kenyans that elections represent a competition of ideas, not a test of strength. Peaceful engagement demonstrates true democratic maturity.
