IEBC introduces biometric eye scanning in voter registration for 2027 elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is upgrading its voter registration system by adding eye (iris) scans alongside fingerprint scans. This new technology is aimed at making the 2027 elections more accurate, safe, and secure.

Meru County IEBC Elections Manager, William Ndung’u, said the move is supported by Section 44 of the Elections Act and fully complies with Kenya’s data protection laws. He assured Kenyans that their personal data will remain safe during registration and verification.

Ndung’u also revealed that in the future, IEBC plans to introduce voice recognition technology as an extra layer of security to further protect the voter registration process.

He reminded Kenyans that no new voters were registered after 2022 because IEBC had no commissioners.

He is now urging essential service providers such as police officers, doctors, journalists, business people, and others who often miss out on voting to register early and exercise their democratic right.

Meru County had 772,139 registered voters in 2022. IEBC is targeting 220,179 new registrations, aiming to reach a total of 992,317 voters by the 2027 General Election.
