The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced November 27, 2025, as the date for all pending by-elections to be conducted.
In a gazette notice dated Friday, August 8, 2025, the electoral commission, led by Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, noted that the by-elections are intended to fill all vacant electoral positions.
“All By-Elections will be held on November 27, 2025. The gazettement of the by-elections has been scheduled in two batches,” read part of the IEBC notice.
The process will be carried out in two batches, with the first batch including vacant Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats in the following wards: Angata Nanyokie (Samburu), Chemundu (Nandi), Chewani (Tana River), Fafi (Garissa), and Kariobangi North Ward (Nairobi City), gazetted on Friday August 8, 2025.
Others listed in the first batch are Kisa East Ward (Kakamega County), Metkei (Elgeyo Marakwet), Mumbuni North (Machakos), Purko Ward (Kajiado County), and Tembelio (Uasin Gishu).
The second batch of electoral units to be filled are for constituencies, and one Senate position came through a special Gazette for Monday, August 11, 2025. They are the Baringo County Senate position, Members of the National Assembly for Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja Constituencies, and the Member of the County Assembly for Kabuchai/Chwele Ward in Bungoma County.
The IEBC also stated that candidates intending to participate in the by-elections as independent candidates must not have been members of any political party for at least three months immediately before the date of the by-elections.
“A political party intending to present candidates in the by-elections shall, after its party primaries, resolve all intra-party disputes and submit the list of persons nominated to contest in the by-elections to the Commission on or before Thursday, October 2, 2025,” the IEBC announced.
While making the announcement, IEBC urged political parties that intend to participate in the by-elections to submit the names and specimen signatures of the authorized people on or before Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
According to the commission, a public officer who intends to contest in the by-elections must resign from public office within seven days of the notice.
In the notice, the electoral commission set Wednesday, October 8 and 9, as the days for the nomination or registration of political parties and independent candidates for the by-elections.
“The Commission shall publish in the Gazette the names and symbols of persons intending to contest in the by-elections as independent candidates at least fourteen at least 14 days before the nomination day,” the Commission stated.
