IEBC warns politicians against spreading propaganda on 2027 elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has condemned recent political statements on alleged election malpractices in the forthcoming 2027 general elections, calling them reckless and misleading.

In a statement issued on Sunday July 13, 2025, the Commission warned that such statements made outside an official election period risk inciting unnecessary public anxiety.

“These claims are not only unfounded but also dangerous in a democratic society such as ours,” the IEBC noted.

“We urge all Kenyans to disassociate themselves from such statements and focus on strengthening, not weakening, our democracy.”

IEBC clarified that it has not announced any elections and that the country is not currently in a campaign period, adding that there is no legal or constitutional basis for election-related propaganda or politically charged rhetoric.

While the IEBC has the authority to form an Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee under Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act, it has stated that this committee is only operational during an official election period.

According to the electoral commission, the position is consistent with a 2022 Supreme Court decision issued in the Sabina Chege petition (E026 of 2022), which outlined the limitations of the Commission’s enforcement powers outside of a declared election period.

“It should be noted that the IEBC has not declared any elections. Further, there is no gazettement or declaration that has been made to warrant such desirous political utterances and propaganda,” read part of IEBC statement.

Meanwhile, IEBC is now fully constituted and will engage with stakeholders including the political parties and leaders to discuss means and ways of restoring trust and confidence in Kenya’s electoral processes.

At the same time, the Commission urged all stakeholders particularly those in the political arena to refrain from acts including speeches likely to erode trust and confidence in the electoral processes, and instead work with IEBC to reinforce and strengthen that trust and confidence.

IEBC also assured members of the public and stakeholders that it shall safeguard its independence and impartiality while discharging its constitutional mandate and its functions as well as remain committed to ensuring free, fair and credible elections in accordance with the laws of Kenya and best practices.
