Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana,’ the nation’s second-highest civilian honour, by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama.
The event was held at the Nation’s presidential palace on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the award acknowledges Prime Minister Modi’s “distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership,” as stated by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
In his acceptance speech, Prime Minister Modi expressed that the award was a source of great pride for him, accepting it “on behalf of the 140 crore Indians.
” He dedicated the honour to the aspirations of the youth in both countries, the historical ties between Ghana and India, and their shared cultural traditions and diversity.
Modi further noted on X that the honour represented a “responsibility; to keep working towards stronger India-Ghana friendship,” affirming India’s commitment to standing with Ghana as a “trusted friend and development partner.”
This visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has travelled to Ghana in three decades, underscoring its significance in bilateral relations.
Prior to the award ceremony, Prime Minister Modi held extensive discussions with President Mahama, resulting in the elevation of India-Ghana ties to a comprehensive partnership.
This move signals a strengthened commitment to cooperation across various sectors between the two nations.
The MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, described the event as “a testament to the deep and long-standing India-Ghana ties.” Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ghana is the initial stop on his five-nation tour.
