Argentina considers putting Lionel Messi's image on banknotes

Argentina is considering putting World Cup-winning football captain Lionel Messi on their official banknotes following the nation's recent success in Qatar.

Local paper El Financiero reports that following the team's remarkable performances in Qatar, there's a possibility of placing the football icon's face on the country's banknotes.

Argentina beat France 4-2 in post match penalties to lift their first World Cup in 36 years. 

Messi has often been touted as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He spearheaded his team's turnaround from a surprise 2-1 defeat to minnows Saudi Arabia in the group stages of the World Cup to claim victory.

His legacy was also in doubt in comparison to that of another Argentine football idol Diego Maradona. Maradona had steered the South American nation to World Cup glory 36 years ago, and in spite of Messi's mega success at club level in Europe, his success was overshadowed by that of Maradona, thanks to the World Cup. But with the 2022 victory, not any more. 

The 35-year-old Rosario-born star began his 2022 journey to immortality by scooping the Player of the Tournament award at the Copa America last year. It was his first piece of international silverware. 

At the World Cup in Qatar, Messi finished with seven goals and three assists. He was also named Player of the Tournament.
