The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the shooting dead of several people and serious injuries sustained by others in Lolkuruk Village in Narok County.
The incident which occurred on Thursday, June 5 saw police officers allegedly opening fire on a group of individuals who had reportedly invaded a private property within the Angama Conservancy.
Lolkuruk Village members say that the said group of individuals was in the process of forcefully grabbing the property.
“Walikua wanataka kuchukua na nguvu…Hii maneno, yule alitangulia awekwe kwa shamba. Yule wa nyuma, atafutiwe mahali pengine,” one said.
The residents also request that the dispatched Rapid Response Team show no bias when investigating this matter.
“Wakikuja kwa ground kuleta peace, wasikue kwa upande moja.”
In a statement, IPOA said that its team has been instructed to gather all the necessary information, assuring Kenyans that they will uncover the truth of the incident.
“In line with the provisions of Section 7(1)(a)(x) of the IPOA Act, CAP 86 of the Laws of Kenya which mandates the investigation of deaths and serious injuries resulting from police actions, the dispatched team has been instructed to gather all information relevant to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the Authority extends its condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and to those who were injured. It also appeals to local residents to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course,” the statement read.
“IPOA will make appropriate recommendations to the relevant State agencies and will update the public on its findings upon the conclusion of its investigations,” the statement concluded.
